The Royal Art Showcase

My recent pastel still life painting " Melody of Summer red" was selected to be displayed at Royal Agricultural Winter Fair 2010 at Exhibition Centre, Toronto from November 5th to November 14th 2010. The Showcase located in Heritage Court of the Direct Energy Centre. If you and your family or friends plan to go there. Remember to stop by and have a look. This is my second time to participate the show. Last time was 2008 with my still life oil on linen " Ontario Grown " won the Fist Place of the show. It is a great even of the year and, lots of fun stuff there. Art show case is just a small part of it.

I have been keep doing sketches on daily bases. As I posted before, I can't commit myself painting daily recently, but the daily commuting on public transit system is the best way to make it up. Also, my lunch time sketches are on and off due to the weather and some other reasons. I have just complete one piece. More will come.

My new sketch book

A new sketch book of mine has started from earlier this month. The crafts paper has light brown tone. More sketches have been made on the daily trips from home to office. If I have kept doing this for ten years, how many sketch book should finished now?

I feel so good to keep doing sketches daily. Like one artist said, "Sketch is breath of life". I enjoy it so much. Especially for me to spend about two and half hour to three hours daily on commuting in public transit system.

May 20th 2010 TTC Subway

Yesterday morning(May 20th, 2010), around around 9:00 a' clock. The TTC subway Bloor / Danforth line's power problem, caused delay. Passengers were told to leave the train at Pape Station and take surface shuttle bus to central station instead. The platform were full of people. Hardly moving towards the exit for about ten minutes though, no chaos. I am very appreciated Toronotonian's patient. Some people using cellphones or digital cameras to take some snap shots for record not seen everyday crowds. I have me pen and sketch book with me :). Moving slowly with the crowds, I did two quick sketches, I chose this one to share.

While waiting for my daughter taking her guitar lessons at a local music school, I was waiting in my car at the parking lot, I did a sketch of the view from the car. Again, it was within 30 minutes.

After finishing my hot dog lunch, I stayed in the bench and drawn a private clinic across the street. 30 minutes only, not very satisfied though. I may make another one.

This is a commissioned portrait in oil (22x28 inches) I have just finished two weeks ago. A loving husband wanted to give this portrait to his wife as a surprise birthday gift. It was based on a 4x6 photo provided by the husband. What a lovely couple!

When I looking at interesting subject, I use my eyes as a pencil, my mind as a sketch book. I tried not stare at people. I told myself what the feature the subject has, shapes, colors, style, accessories. I would close my eyes for a few seconds and see if every thing is in my mind. Those thoughts can help me replay the images recorded in my mind.

This is an oil on linen portrait commissioned by one of my friends for his daughter Cleo. She is a sweet girl and always has smile on her face. She loves dogs, though she hasn't own a dog yet. I let her pose for me with my dog Molly. Our families spend Chritsmas holidays together last year. Cleo and Molly soon became very good friends.
